CHILDREN’S DENTAL

At High Street Dental we are highly passionate about caring for your children’s teeth, along with teaching them about good oral hygiene and preventative dental care. One of the first steps in ensuring that your child enjoys the best oral health possible is helping them feel comfortable with seeing the dentist.

Going to the dentist shouldn’t be scary or painful for your child. We want their visit with us to be something they look forward to!

Your Child’s First Visit

During the first visit, our dentist will examine the development of the oral structures of your child. We will identify any impending oral issues that can affect the oral health and development of your child and provide best paediatric dental care treatments that can stop the issues before they appear. One of the primary goals of the first dental visit is to educate you – the parent – about the importance of your child’s oral health. This way we ensure good oral hygiene and care in addition to developing a proper diet for your child.

Upon the first dental visit we will advise you to bring your child every six months for dental check-ups. The monitoring of the growth and development of teeth, gums, and jaws of children at regular intervals can identify all oral-related issues, provide advance dental care for children ensuring they get the proper oral development.

What are some tips for the first visit?

> Even very young children are perceptive and can pick up and react to any anxiety you might have about the upcoming visit, so try not to show any signs of anxiety yourself.
> Arrange for a morning appointment if possible. Children are often more positive and receptive.
>Avoid talking about specific procedures or instruments, as these ideas may confuse or upset your child. Words like ‘drill’, ‘injection’ and ‘needle’ are potentially very frightening to a child.

When should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend children first see a dentist by 2 years, as they start to get accustomed to the sights, and sounds of a dental practice. We guide parents on the best way to clean their child’s teeth and discuss factors that can affect their dental health as they grow. By ages 4 – 6, most kids visit the dentist for their routine hygiene visits. Parents are welcome to bring their child with them to their regular hygiene appointment to get them accustomed to the environment and our staff.

What are fissure sealants?

The grinding surface of permanent molars have deep groves, which are hard to clean and have a high likelihood of developing decay.

Fissure sealants are an acrylic-like material than our dentist applies to the biting surfaces of high-risk primary and permanent teeth, to seal these grooves and prevent food traps, thus protecting them from decay. Because fissure sealants can only be applied to the biting surfaces of the teeth, and not the surfaces in-between the teeth, daily flossing continues to be an important component of maintaining good oral hygiene.

At High Street Dental your dentist will check the condition of your child’s fissure sealants during their twice-yearly check-ups.
