Oral Examinations

A large part of maintaining good oral health is balancing an effective at-home routine with regular dental check-ups. It is generally recommended that you visit your dentist every six months to help detect cavities and other oral problems early, reducing the potential for major dental treatment.

Here at High Street Dental, a comprehensive oral exam involves a thorough assessment of your teeth, jaws, gums and tongue; looking specifically for cavities, plaque build-up, ways to improve your smile and any signs of gum disease. We will also perform an oral cancer screening check.

We will confidentially discuss your general and oral health as well as your diet, nutrition and current oral hygiene routine. This is a perfect time to raise any issues or concerns you may have.

Once your initial check-up has been completed, we will proceed with a professional dental clean (preventative care) to ensure plaque build-up and tartar is removed to reduce your risk of getting cavities or losing teeth.

How long do check-ups generally go for?

This can depend on patient to patient, but generally a dental check-up (including scale and clean) will take no more than 30 minutes. A longer appointment may be necessary if you are visiting us as a new patient (usually 45 minutes).

Is a dental x-ray necessary during a check-up?

No, it is not always necessary to have a dental x-ray taken during a check-up. However, your dentist may recommend one to further investigate any signs of decay they may have spotted during an oral examination. A dental x-ray may also be recommended if you’re experiencing unexplained pain or any other problem that requires a clearer picture of your teeth to identify properly.
