Veneers

One of the most effective and popular procedure to achieve a new smile is through the application of veneers. They are custom made shells or facings, that when applied to the surface of a tooth, can greatly help to cosmetically improve your smile. It also provides a barrier that helps to strengthen your teeth and protects them against further damage with proper dental care followed.

Veneers are made of either composite resin or porcelain and are an excellent option for treating problems such as chipped or cracked tooth, gappy tooth, discoloured tooth, uneven shape and size or minor crooked teeth. They can be tailored to apply to one tooth or multiple teeth depending on your desired look and what suites your requirements the most.

Composite vs Porcelain veneers, which are best?

The choice between composite or porcelain veneers will depend on your budget and desired outcome.

Composite veneers are directly bonded to your teeth much in the same way a composite filling is placed in your tooth. An advantage of composite veneers is that they require only a single dental visit. They are also a cheaper option to porcelain veneers in the short term. However a major disadvantage is that they are not as strong as porcelain veneers, must be maintained more regularly and are rarely permanent. After a while composite veneers have been known to lose their lustre so they will need to be polished and replaced if they discolour.

On the other hand, porcelain veneers are more natural looking than composite as they are better at mimicking the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. They are more durable requiring less maintenance and do not change colour or lose their shine making them cost effective in the long term. However, they are initially more costly and require a minimum of two visits to our clinic. While your veneers are sent off to a laboratory for production there will be a wait of approximately 2 to 4 weeks. In the meantime we will provide you with temporary veneers until your new ones come back to us ready for placement.

How long will my veneers last?

It really depends on the material used (composite or porcelain) but in general you should get between 10 to 20 years of wear from your veneers.  A large benefit of veneers is that if problems do arise they are very quickly and easily fixed. However, just like any dental work, you will see the benefit last longer if you maintain a regular oral hygiene routine which includes brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day, along with regular visits to our clinics.
